KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has identified and requested several social media platforms to remove purported leaked investigation information on the Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin's case.
"We have submitted a request to the social media operators, including TikTok and Telegram to remove the content.
"Disseminating claims regarding the investigation information of the case is an irresponsible act and could disrupt the trial process," said MCMC in a statement today.
It warned the public against sharing false and unverified information and advised them to delete any posts or comments that could lead to speculation.
"This may constitute an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," it said.
MCMC said offenders may face a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year, or both, and an additional fine of RM1,000 for each day the offense continues after conviction.
Zayn Rayyan's family lodged a police report yesterday about a leak of details of the murder investigation on social media.
Bukit Aman's federal Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the police will work with MCMC to investigate the purported leak of information.
He said the police will ask MCMC to block content that could disrupt the court proceedings.
Today (June 15), Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the police received two reports, one from the victim's family and the other from the case's investigating officer.
He said the investigation is being carried out under Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act, Section 203A of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
