Johor police crackdown on illegal gambling, 102 arrested statewide

JOHOR BARU: Police arrested 102 individuals, including 12 women, in a three-day statewide crackdown on illegal gambling that began on June 8.

Johor police chief Commissioner M. Kumar said the operations codenamed Ops Dadu Khas between June 8 and 10, targeted premises suspected of being used for illegal gambling, including online gambling and unlicensed lotteries.

Out of the 102 arrested, 11 of them were foreigners. The suspects, aged between 18 and 67, were arrested under the Open Gaming Houses Act 1953 and the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Police seized RM15,195 and a variety of gambling paraphernalia that included 94 mobilephones, 39 printers, 155 betting slips, 104 playing cards, Wi-Fi modems and stationery.

Since Jan 1, police had conducted 1,168 raids under Ops Dadu Khas that resulted in 1,594 arrests and the seizure of gambling equipment worth RM460,855.

Kumar said ongoing raids would be conducted to eradicate all forms of illegal gambling, including slot machines, unlicensed lotteries and illegal betting.

He added police were cooperating with Tenaga Nasional Bhd and local council enforcement officers to terminate electricity supply and revoke the establishments' business licences.
