KUALA LUMPUR: Calpis Soda One In A Million (CSOIAM) contestant Marygrace, 24, opened up about a harrowing childhood tragedy that continues to impact her life.
The Sabah native revealed that her father was murdered 15 years ago, right in front of their home in Keningau, when she was just nine years old, Harian Metro reported.
To her shock, the perpetrator was her late father's friend, a betrayal that left a lasting emotional scar.
Reflecting on the incident during her performance of Sepi Sekuntum Mawar Merah, a classic ballad by Ella, Marygrace said she drew on her painful memories to connect deeply with the song.
"Through the guidance of the CSOIAM team, I grasped the full meaning of the song.
"It resonates with the pain of losing my father in such a tragic way," she shared after her performance at Studio TV3 in Glenmarie, Shah Alam last night.
"While singing, I let the emotions flow, sharing my vulnerability with the audience and judges.
"Despite the trauma, I don't want to exploit my story for sympathy or publicity," she added.
Marygrace admitted that her traumatic past has led to challenges with mental health, including anxiety and depression.
However, she credits singing as her solace and a form of therapy.
"Singing has been my way of healing. It allows me to channel my emotions constructively.
"Joining this competition is my way of proving that pain can transform into something beautiful.
"If you're struggling, find someone to talk to. If that's not possible, let music be your voice," she said.
Marygrace was among 10 contestants who will be advancing to the third week of CSOIAM, which include Zazzleen, Eylia Guntabid, Hafiz Zainal, Mariam, Kai Deva, Alya Mardien, Dayangku Iffah, Jimi, and Rezza Shah.
The ultimate winner will take home a grand prize of RM500,000, a car worth RM200,000, and a two-year recording contract with Alternate Records & Talents.
Hosted by Haniff Hamzah and Fiza Frizzy, CSOIAM continues to captivate audiences with its powerful performances and inspiring stories.
