LIMA, Peru: Representatives from 21 Apec economies have strengthened commitment to inclusive and resilient economic growth at the recently-concluded Apec senior officials' meeting here.
The Apec Senior Officials ambassador Carlos Vasquez said the consensus is a key element in fulfilling collective responsibilities to achieve dynamic and inclusive economic goals.
In his opening speech, Vasquez reminded that Apec remains committed to the 2040 Putrajaya Vision and the Aotearoa Action Plan, which guide Asia-Pacific countries toward a more connected and collectively growing community.
"This is our commitment to a more balanced and resilient future," said Vasquez in a statement released by the Apec Secretariat here today.
The meeting marked the conclusion of a series of discussions on Apec 2024 priorities, including trade and investment for inclusive growth, digital innovation, as well as sustainable and resilient development.
Vasquez highlighted that Apec economies are now facing interconnected global challenges, from climate change to economic inequality and digital transformation.
"Since our first meeting in Lima last December, we have moved forward together with a clear purpose, bound by our commitment to Apec's core values," said Vasquez.
He added that the meeting was an important step ahead of the upcoming Apec Economic Leaders' Week, with hopes of providing clearer policy directions for a more inclusive trade ecosystem.
One of the key initiatives discussed was the Arequipa priorities and the sustainable finance initiative, aimed at reducing food waste and introducing clean energy and low-carbon hydrogen.
"We have witnessed the acceptance of these key initiatives leading to significant achievements in promoting financial inclusion and fostering the wellbeing of the most vulnerable communities," said Vasquez.
Digitalisation was a main focus of the meeting, with Apec members emphasising the importance of digital inclusion and supporting economies that transition to formal markets through technology.
"Together, we are addressing the complex challenges that strengthen Apec's resilience, positioning us to meet the growing demands of the economy," he added.
In an effort to achieve sustainable growth, the meeting also emphasised measures to reduce food waste, promote low-carbon energy solutions, and enhance financial inclusion.
Apec reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring these initiatives benefit its members by driving inclusive development and boosting regional economic integration.
Vasquez said the meeting provided an opportunity for Apec economies to strengthen ties, ensuring all members can leverage the trade and innovation opportunities offered.
"We hope that the discussions this week will continue in the spirit of cooperation and shared purpose," he said.
The meeting concluded with a resolution to build a more interconnected and stronger Asia-Pacific community, with a stronger and more competitive commitment to Apec.
"We will continue working to shape a better and more connected future," said Vasquez.
The meeting was followed by the Apec Ministerial Meeting scheduled for No 14, which will lay the foundation for the Apec Economic Leaders' Meeting from Nov 15-16.
