Manulife, Roots & Shoots Malaysia to revitalise "Denai Warisan" in Wang Kelian

KUALA LUMPUR: Manulife Malaysia has formed a three-year partnership with Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots Malaysia to rehabilitate the "Denai Warisan" nature trail in the Wang Kelian region, aiming to empower local communities and preserve biodiversity.

The collaboration aligns with Manulife's Impact Agenda, focusing on sustainable futures as well as inclusive economic opportunities and well-being.

The first year of the partnership will focus on restoring a 10-kilometer stretch of the Denai Warisan trail, turning it into a flagship eco-tourism destination and environmental education hub.

Manulife's funding will support biodiversity surveys, extensive trail restoration and the establishment of designated flora and fauna zones.

Wang Kelian, located in Malaysia's smallest state of Perlis, remains economically underdeveloped despite its rich biodiversity and pristine nature.

"Manulife Malaysia and Roots & Shoots Malaysia share a vision of empowering local communities while preserving our natural heritage," said Manulife Holdings Bhd group chief executive officer Vibha Coburn .

"This partnership enables our customers, employees, and advisors to actively participate in environmental conservation and community development, creating a meaningful and lasting impact."

The partnership builds upon the "Wang Kelian, Perlis - The Forgotten Valley" project, which was launched in collaboration with Think City and The Habitat Foundation.

The project aims to make the Denai Warisan trail accessible to the public while providing economic opportunities to local communities.

Roots & Shoots Malaysia president TP Lim said the holistic approach to conservation inspired by the Jane Goodall Institute's work in Africa.

"For biodiversity to be effectively conserved, human communities near these reserves must have access to sustainable income opportunities. By working together, we can create a better world for animals, nature, and human communities," Lim added, thanking Jabatan Perhutanan Perlis for its ongoing support.

With the Denai Warisan trail set to become a beacon of eco-tourism and education, the partnership not only revitalises Wang Kelian's natural heritage but also paves the way for sustainable economic growth in the region.
