KUALA LUMPUR: Japan-based global IT services provider NTT Data plans to build one of Asia Pacific's largest data centre campuses in Johor Bahru, Johor.
It has proposed the acquisition of a 27.7 hectare land in Gelang Patah, Johor Bahru to build a new data centre with planned 290 megawatts (MW) capacity.
NTT Data said the site located in Gelang Patah will become one of the largest data centre campuses in Asia Pacific, comprising six dedicated buildings and a substantial IT load capacity.
The first building with an initial capacity of 48MW is planned to launch in April 2027.
The data centre project will feature new technologies like direct liquid cooling to meet the growing demand for AI applications and integrate energy-efficient, sustainable design.
NTT Data data centre service chief executive officer and president Doug Adams said Johor Bahru is an increasingly important cross-border economic zone due to its proximity to Singapore.
"With the Asia Pacific emerging as one of the fastest growing and most influential markets for IT and data centres, our strategic land acquisition and development in Malaysia underscores our commitment to further expansion in the region," he said.
Meanwhile, data centre service executive vice president Yasuo Suzuki said the expansion plan in Gelang Patah enhances the companys digital infrastructure in Malaysia, drives Asia Pacific's economic growth, strengthens regional ties, creates jobs, and fosters technological innovation.
NTT Data operates six facilities in Cyberjaya, with a total IT load capacity of 20 MW. It operates one of the world's largest data centre platforms, with over 150 facilities across more than 20 countries.
